What your life path number is
In Pythagorean numerology the life path is the core of the chart. It comes from your full date of birth, so it never changes: it describes the theme you were born with, your natural way of operating, and the lesson that keeps coming back in new costumes.
Your name numbers describe the tools you carry; the life path describes where those tools are meant to take you. That is why numerologists read it before the birthday number, the personal year and the name numbers. Get yours in seconds with the free life path calculator, or work it out by hand below.
How to calculate your life path number (worked example)
The Tarovia calculator uses the simplest and most widely used method: add every digit of your birth date, then keep reducing until a single digit remains. The exceptions are 11, 22 and 33, which you leave as they are.
- Write out your full birth date. Month first or day first makes no difference, because you are adding the same digits. Take November 29, 1987.
- Add every digit: 1 + 1 + 2 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 38.
- Reduce: 3 + 8 = 11. That is a master number, so you stop here. It is written 11/2: master 11 on a base of 2.
- Second example: July 5, 1984 gives 0 + 7 + 0 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 4 = 34, and 3 + 4 = 7.
- Some schools reduce the day, month and year separately first. The final single digit is always the same; only the appearance of a master number along the way can differ.
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33
A doubled digit works like an amplifier. 11 is two 1s (will) that add up to 2 (sensitivity); 22 pairs vision with the building power of 4; 33 lifts the care of 6 into service. That is why they are always written with their base: 11/2, 22/4, 33/6.
Traditionally, people with a master number live mostly from the base number in their early decades and grow into the full vibration later. A master number brings more intuition, more nervous charge and less slack, so read the section for your base number as well.
Life path 1: the pioneer (The Magician)
One is raw initiative. Life path 1 people start things while everyone else is still talking, with strong will, clear opinions and little patience for other people's rules. The gift is the nerve to go first. The shadow is stubbornness, chosen isolation and treating a request for help as defeat.
- Love: needs a partner with a full life of their own who never tries to steer. The lesson is that closeness does not cost independence.
- Work: founding a business, leadership roles, anything that starts from a blank page.
- Tarot card: The Magician (I), ruled by Mercury. Wand, cup, sword and pentacle lie on his table: a 1 already holds all four elements and only has to begin. The four Aces belong here too.
Life path 2: the diplomat (The High Priestess)
A 2 reads the room before anyone speaks. This is the path of the mediator and the confidant. Gifts: intuition, tact, patience, hearing what goes unsaid. Shadow: over-accommodating, dreading conflict and parking your needs until they sour into resentment.
- Love: the most relationship-minded number of all. Loves deeply and loyally, but must not dissolve into a partner.
- Work: counselling, therapy, mediation, HR, any strong duo; wherever sensitivity is the actual skill.
- Tarot card: The High Priestess (II), ruled by the Moon. She sits between the black pillar Boaz and the white pillar Jachin with a half-hidden Torah scroll: she knows more than she says. The Two of Cups carries the same theme of two sides meeting.
Life path 3: the creator (The Empress)
Three is expression: words, images, laughter, color. A life path 3 has to create and speak or it slowly dims. Charming, funny, easy to like. The shadow is scattered energy, ten half-finished projects and a breezy surface hiding real sensitivity to criticism.
- Love: flirtation, lightness, romantic gestures. Needs someone who laughs with them and never dampens their enthusiasm.
- Work: writing, art, media, marketing, performance, teaching; any role where the voice is the instrument.
- Tarot card: The Empress (III), ruled by Venus, enthroned among ripening wheat beside a Venus-marked heart: fertility in every sense, creative included. The Three of Cups adds that joy grows when it is shared.
Life path 4: the builder (The Emperor)
Four builds. Four walls, four directions, four elements: structure, order and patient work that pays off over years. Life path 4 people are reliable and concrete. The shadow is rigidity, workaholism, fear of change and the urge to control every variable.
- Love: loyalty shown through actions rather than speeches. Expresses love by building a shared home. The lesson is to say feelings out loud.
- Work: engineering, finance, architecture, skilled trades, project management.
- Tarot card: The Emperor (IV), ruled by Aries: a stone throne carved with rams' heads, armor under the robe, bare mountains behind. Authority built on discipline. The Four of Wands and its wedding garland show the stability it earns.
Life path 5: the explorer (The Hierophant)
Five sits in the middle of the 1 to 9 scale and cannot sit still. This is the path of freedom, movement, the senses and first-hand experience. Curious, quick, adaptable, a natural communicator. The shadow is restlessness, dodging commitment and overdoing anything that feels good.
- Love: needs adventure and room to breathe. With the right person a 5 can be deeply faithful, as long as it never feels like a cage.
- Work: sales, travel, journalism, events, anything changeable and full of people.
- Tarot card: The Hierophant (V), ruled by Taurus. It looks like a contradiction, but the lesson of 5 is finding your own faith through experience rather than borrowed dogma. The Five of Wands shows the friction change is born from.
Life path 6: the nurturer (The Lovers)
Six is the heart of the home. Life path 6 people look after family, friends, animals, the garden, the whole street, with a strong eye for beauty and fairness. The shadow is perfectionism, believing everything falls apart without them, and help nobody asked for.
- Love: made for committed partnership and family. The lesson is that love does not have to be earned through sacrifice.
- Work: medicine, caregiving, teaching, interior design, hospitality, counselling.
- Tarot card: The Lovers (VI), ruled by Gemini. The archangel Raphael blesses the couple before the Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life: a choice made from your values, not only a romance. The Six of Cups adds tenderness without keeping score.
Life path 7: the seeker (The Chariot)
Seven wants what lies under the surface: the path of the researcher, the mystic and the philosopher. Life path 7 people need silence, books, nature and time alone. Sharp mind, strong intuition, a knack for patterns others miss; many end up drawn to tarot and astrology. The shadow is withdrawal, distrust and retreating into the head when the moment asks you to feel.
- Love: opens up slowly, and only to someone who respects their solitude. For a 7, a deep conversation is a form of intimacy.
- Work: science, research, psychology, writing, tech, spiritual work.
- Tarot card: The Chariot (VII), ruled by Cancer. The charioteer drives a black and a white sphinx with no reins, by focus alone. The Seven of Cups, with its visions in the clouds, teaches the other lesson of 7: telling revelation from illusion.
Life path 8: the strategist (Strength)
Eight is power and matter. On its side it becomes the infinity sign: what you send out comes back. Life path 8 people have a talent for management, money and hard decisions, and they are hard to knock down. The shadow is control, measuring self-worth by the bank balance, and a toughness that closes the heart.
- Love: looks for a strong partner who is a genuine equal. The lesson is that a relationship has no winners and losers.
- Work: business, finance, law, property, executive roles.
- Tarot card: Strength (VIII in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck), ruled by Leo. A woman with the lemniscate over her head gently closes the lion's jaws: mastery of yourself, not of others. In the Marseille order the eighth card is Justice, which suits this karmic number too.
Life path 9: the sage (The Hermit)
Nine closes the cycle and contains every digit before it. This is the path of the humanitarian, the healer, the old soul: big picture, deep empathy, a need to serve something larger. The shadow is bitterness, clinging to the past and saving the world at your own expense.
- Love: loves generously and idealistically, and often feels misunderstood. The lesson is to receive, not only to give.
- Work: the arts, nonprofits, medicine, spiritual work, anything cross-cultural.
- Tarot card: The Hermit (IX), ruled by Virgo. On a snowy peak he raises a lantern holding a six-pointed star: wisdom won in solitude lights the way for others. The Nine of Pentacles, with its hooded falcon, shows the fruit of that maturity.
Life path 11: the master number of intuition
Master number 11 is intuition turned all the way up. A life path 11/2 picks up more than others, often has vivid dreams and strong hunches, and can inspire a room just by walking in. The shadow is nervous tension, oversensitivity, fear of its own power and swinging between grand plans and self-doubt. Day to day, an 11 also lives as a 2.
- Love: wants a spiritual connection, not only an emotional one. Needs a partner who grounds them without mocking them.
- Work: teaching, the arts, psychology, intuitive work, public speaking.
- Tarot card: Justice (XI in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck), ruled by Libra. Scales and sword between two pillars: an 11 has to balance vision with truth. The High Priestess is its base card.
Life path 22: the Master Builder
Master number 22 joins the intuition of 11 to the practical force of 4 and can turn a huge vision into something that stands for decades: a company, an institution, a movement. The shadow is freezing under your own potential, overwork, and treating anything short of a great work as failure.
- Love: loyal and protective, though often absorbed in a mission. Needs a partner who shares the plan or has an equally serious one.
- Work: large-scale projects, architecture, entrepreneurship, politics, community organizations.
- Tarot card: The Fool (0), whom many readers also count as 22, since he closes the circle of twenty-two Major Arcana and opens it again. Every great structure starts with a step into the unknown. The Emperor is its base card.
Life path 33: the Master Teacher
Master number 33 lifts the care of 6 to the level of service. People on this path teach and heal, mostly by example, with an enormous heart and a gift for acceptance. The shadow is martyrdom, no boundaries and a bar set impossibly high. Many numerologists read 33 at full strength only when the person's life truly revolves around service, and as a 6 until then.
- Love: loves protectively and without conditions, but has to watch out for choosing partners who need rescuing.
- Work: teaching, therapy, healing work, working with children, art with a message.
- Tarot card: there is no card XXXIII. Readers work through a doubled Empress (3) and The Lovers (6), its reduction: love that creates, and the choice to give it.
Life path number compatibility
Compatibility in numerology is not a list of allowed and forbidden pairs. It shows where a couple flows and where they rub. Traditionally the numbers fall into three families:
Read master numbers through their base (11 as 2, 22 as 4, 33 as 6), with extra intensity. Pairs from different families, like 4 and 5, are not doomed; they just have more to teach each other. For a specific relationship, a Love Clarity Reading will tell you far more than two numbers side by side.
- 1, 5, 7: the numbers of mind and independence. They understand the need for space and do not try to own each other.
- 2, 4, 8: the numbers of building and security. They plan well together and make a stable home.
- 3, 6, 9: the numbers of heart and creativity. Expression, empathy and a love of beauty hold them together.
Working with your life path card
Treat the card that matches your life path as your patron in the deck. Stand it by a candle on your altar and sit with its symbols, ideally on your birthday or when you begin something important. When it turns up in a spread, many readers take it as a sign the answer touches your core lesson. The full meanings are in our guide to the Major Arcana.
If your own number keeps showing up on clocks and receipts, see our guide to angel numbers: in the tradition, that is a sign you are on your own track.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my life path number?
Add every digit of your full birth date and keep reducing until one digit remains, stopping at 11, 22 or 33. For example, July 5, 1984 gives 34, and 3 + 4 = 7. The free Tarovia calculator does it instantly.
What does life path 11 mean?
The master number of intuition and inspiration: heightened sensitivity, strong hunches and a gift for inspiring others, with nervous tension and self-doubt as its challenge. Written 11/2, it also carries the diplomatic energy of 2. Its tarot card is Justice.
Is 11 a master number or just a 2?
Both. In 11/2, the master 11 is the potential and the 2 is how you tend to operate day to day. Many people live mainly from the 2 early on and grow into the full 11 with age.
Can your life path number change?
No, it comes from your birth date. What changes is how you live it: younger years often show the shadow, maturity brings out the gifts. Your personal year, by contrast, changes every year.
Which life path numbers are compatible?
Traditionally, numbers from the same family get along most easily: 1, 5 and 7; 2, 4 and 8; 3, 6 and 9. Other pairings work too, they just learn each other through more friction.
